The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
