Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
